1 Introduction

The Countryside Skills Training Centre is committed to providing a website accessible to the widest possible audience, including people with visual, hearing, cognitive or motor impairments. We endeavour to conform to World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 1.0 Level AA and the site is (W3C) XHTML and CSS validated.

However, whilst our website team make every effort to ensure the best user experience, as standards and guidelines evolve with new stricter coding requirements, technology, plug-ins and browser updates this is an ongoing process. Some older or relevant training documents such as content from external sites that we link to or present on our site may not yet reach these standards.

Accessibility Preferences

You can change the way this website looks to suit your preferences. The settings that do this differ from browser to browser, but most browsers offer some or all of the following topics.

2 Increasing the Font Size

If you use Internet Explorer, go to the "View" menu, select "Text Size" and then select either "Larger" or "Largest". You can also select "Zoom" from the "View" menu to enlarge sections of the web pages or use the keyboard shortcuts Ctrl + and Ctrl- to reduce the page size.

In Firefox go to the "View" menu and select "Zoom" then "Zoom In" to enlarge the whole page or in the "Zoom" menu first select "Zoom Text Only" then "View/Zoom/Zoom In". Alternatively you can use the keyboard shortcuts Ctrl+ to enlarge page and Ctrl- to reduce the page size.

In the Safari Browser (often used with Mac computers). This works in the same way as Firefox. Additionally you can change the font size and style by selecting the "Edit" menu then "Preferences" and then the "Appearance" tab.

3 Changing Text Styles and Colours

In Internet Explorer select "Tools" menu then "Internet Options" then "Accessibility". This has options to ignore and change the designed page fonts, font styles and background colours on the page. Note that if ‘Ignore colours specified on web pages’ is selected the web page will be predominantly white and this can produce a glare on some screen magnifiers.

In Firefox select "Tools" then "Options" then click on the "Content Tab" and there are options to change the font styles and colours. Note that changing the background colour to white can produce a glare on some screen magnifiers.

Safari Browser

You can change the font size and style by selecting the "Edit" menu then "Preferences" and then the "Appearance" tab.

4 Web Browser Compatibility

Our website team develop the online content to support a range of web browsers including: Internet Explorer Version 5.0 upwards, Firefox 1.0 and Netscape. Due to advances in stricter website (html and xhtml) coding and web standards we cannot guarantee that some early versions of these browsers will display content correctly. We highly recommend that you upgrade your browser regularly.

5 Microsoft Windows Accessibility Wizard

This programme allows you to set your own preferences for your PC and internet browsing. To find the Accessibility Wizard:

Select the Start menu then Programs

Select Accessories

Select Accessibility

Select Accessibility Wizard and then follow the wizard

6 PDF Files

In some cases course support material may be offered for download in Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Format (PDF). You will need the free Adobe Reader software to read these. The latest version of Accessible Adobe Reader contains many capabilities specifically designed to make it easier to read PDF files, regardless of whether the files have been optimized for accessibility. You can find out more about the product and download it by clicking here.

From this page you can also download a PDF document on 'Accessing PDF Documents with Assistive Technology' - A Screen Reader User’s Guide.

7 Flash Movies

To experience the flash based ‘slideshow’ in the banner of the homepage you will need the Adobe free flash player plug-in installed on your PC. You can download it from the Adobe website – www.adobe.com.

If the flash player is installed on your PC and you are using Firefox or Safari browsers and you still don’t see the movie it is possible that 'allowing JavaScript' has been switched off. To enable JavaScript the following may help.

In Firefox select "Tools" then "Options" then click on the "Content Tab" and make sure that "Enable JavaScript" is checked.

In Safari select "Edit" then "Preferences" then the "Security" tab. Make sure that "Enable Plug-ins, JavaScript and Java" are all checked.

If the player is not installed you will see a non-flash static banner.
