Trailer Handling

 

Anyone who passed their driving test after January 1997 will find that towing heavy trailers is not a standard category covered on their licence and an additional test will need to be taken to entitle them to drive a vehicle with a trailer.

 

This course is not a replacement for the DSA Trailer Test, but is designed to assist trainees to gain confidence and improve skills by understanding the basic towing principles and applying them to individual circumstances.

 

It is also aimed to satisfy the legal requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act, by providing adequate training for operators using trailers as part of their work.

 

Basic Trailer Handling

 

One-day integrated training and assessment course for a maximum of four people.

 

Course Covers:

  • Legal requirements for use of a road trailer
  • The main causes of accidents
  • Towing vehicle/trailer combinations and set-up
  • Essential vehicle/trailer safety checks
  • Correct coupling/un-coupling procedures
  • Loading and nose weight checks
  • Vehicle/trailer stability and security
  • Handling techniques including reversing
  • Assessment of individual performance and feedback

Cost: £150

 

On-Road Trailer Handling

 

A minimum of one day’s guidance and tuition on the road for a maximum of two people. Trainees must hold a full driving licence (category B).

 

Course Covers:

  • The Trailer Test schedule
  • Driving standards
  • Vehicle/trailer checks
  • On-road practice
  • Feedback of individual performance, and further training or practical requirements prior to taking the test

Cost: £150

 

Off-Road Trailer Handling

 

One-day integrated training and assessment course for a maximum of three people.

 

Trainees must have completed the basic trailer handling course, hold driving licence and a 4x4 Professional Off Road Driving Certificate or equivalent.

 

Course Covers:

  • Risk assessment for towing off-road
  • Legal requirements (HASW Act & P.U.W.E.R. ’98)
  • Off-road techniques
  • Vehicle/trailer checks
  • Driving off-road laden and unladen
  • Assessment of individual performance and feedback

Cost: £180
